What is a CUPOLA?

Katherine Fossler

Updated: Dec 21, 2022

A cupola is barn topper - a tower or dome-like feature projecting from the top of a barn roof. At Pleasant Pasture we have an entire Cupola Collection - 12 in all!

They are the silent sentinels that guard our animal residents.

The the function, beauty and enormous size of these structures is awe inspiring.

Cupolas:

  • Provide venting for heat and gases to pass through the barn room to prevent spontaneous combustion

  • Serve as lightening rods, often with grounding wires

  • Are often topped with a finial or weathervane

  • Stand between 6 and 14 feet tall

  • Have been around a while! Our cupolas are over 100 years each

Now that you know about cupolas, you will begin to see them everywhere!

Enjoy.
